Just making it to the bus for this excursion was a near-death experience as I tried not to get swept out to sea by the tsunami coming from the sky. We’ve been told by everyone we meet that Mallorca is currently going through ‘the worst weather it’s seen in 25 years’. Or it would be, if it wasn’t shitting it down. ![]() So why the hell am I standing here in my waterproofs in the middle of this damp Spanish wood with a bunch of other bedraggled individuals, talking about our favourite animals like we’re six-year-olds? What are the health benefits of Forest Bathing?.“What even lives in forests?” My mind goes blank and all I can think of is another stripy creature: a zebra. There are two more people to go before I have to come up with an animal. “Because they’re so fierce.” Barbara smiles encouragingly. “A tiger,” he mumbles, adjusting the hood of his raincoat. Doing meditative breathing in the pouring rainīarbara turns enquiringly to the next person in the circle. ![]() If you could hear an eye roll, the sound of my retinas rotating inwards would have the whole group ducking for cover – but fortunately the only thing anyone can hear right now is the sound of the rain drumming steadily on hoods and umbrellas as we stand in this forest clearing in Mallorca on a decidedly damp November morning trying to act like we are having a good time. “A mouse,” replies the woman to her left, “because they’re really cute, and, um, they love cheese…?” She tails off, vaguely. “What is your favourite forest animal, and why?” asks Barbara, with the forced enthusiasm of someone trying to make the best of a challenging situation.
